Staunton, VA—Mary Baldwin University held the annual Student Government installation and Leadership Awards ceremony on Tuesday evening. The Athletic Department’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was selected as the recipient of the MBU Organization Service Award for 2017-2018. This award is given to a group who demonstrates organizational excellence in campus and community service.

SAAC was nominated because of their many initiatives through the academic year that promote the athletic department and the university in both the campus community and the greater Staunton/Augusta County area.

Highlights of their accomplishments this year include:

  • Donating over 5800 items to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. This placed MBU 3rd out of 19 schools in the USA South Conference competition, Cans Across the Conference.

  • Participation in the Staunton Christmas Parade, reaching out to thousands of local residents.

  • Collecting donations of $1200 for Special Olympics of Virginia as part of the Polar Plunge fundraiser, where they earned the opportunity to jump into the Atlantic Ocean in February.

  • Working to raise a record $1125.24 in cash and product donations for the campus initiative $5.55 Feminine Hygiene Drive, which provides hygiene products to area homeless girls.

The award is recognition for all the hard work SAAC has put in for these community service projects during this academic year. Congratulations to all the representatives for a job well done.
