MBU XC Hosts Golden Acorn Invitational

STAUNTON, VA- The 1st annual Golden Acorn Cross Country Invitational was hosted by MBU on Saturday. The 5k collegiate race took place at the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences campus. This was the first home cross country meet for the Fighting Squirrels since 2014.

Crossing the line first for MBU in the men's 5k was Maxwell Klimczak. He finished the demanding course in 18:52, good for 6th place overall. Tyren McCrimmon, also a first year, finished 13th.

"Max ran a strong race. I know he's tired from the training we're doing, and sloppy footing didn't make for fast times today," said head coach Heather Ely after the race. "But Max's time improved from last week's very flat 5k course, so once he's rested some I think he'll pop a great race and surprise himself. Tyren is coming back from a knee issue and is getting stronger every day. He started and finished strong. We'll keep working on building his endurance through the middle."

The overall winner of the men's race was Patrick Wachter, representing William and Mary's club Team Blitz. He now holds the course record in 16:37. Hampden-Sydney took home the team title.

In the women's 5k, Stephanie Barbaro led the way for the Fighting Squirrels, finishing 2nd overall. Josephina Reeder followed shortly behind in 3rd place and Tayla Jay-Bryner in 6th. Colette Levens and Jaquelin Rosas rounded out the scorers for MBU.

"Stephanie and Jo led the way once again. They looked strong all the way to the line and responded when we needed them to," added Ely. "As a whole, the team is a little banged up—but we're training through these early meets with our sights set on the conference meet in October. Of course we wanted to win our home event but today simply wasn't our day."

Hollins University took home both the women's individual and team titles. Sierra Foster was the overall women's winner and course record holder in a time of 23:01. The Hollins team edged out MBU for the team title by 5 points.

"We're looking forward to hosting the meet again and building this invitational. We have a great course in a beautiful setting, and we hope more teams will join us in the future."

Mary Baldwin athletics would like to thank everyone involved to help make this meet a success, from volunteer staff to student employees.

The MBU Cross Country team travels next to Cary, NC for the Adidas XC Invitational on Friday, September 14th.
