MBU Track Sets Record-Breaking Standards For 2019

Winston-Salem, Nc - The Mary Baldwin University track & field team competed on Saturday at the Wake Forest Invitational, held at the JDL Fast Track. The meet featured a mix of NCAA Division I, II and III competition. The Fighting Squirrels had a record-breaking meet, with four people breaking five previously held school records.

Max Doerwaldt placed 12th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.76 seconds and made the finals of the triple jump, placing 9th with a jump of 12.12 meters.

Gregory Woodard clocked a time of 54.17 seconds setting a new school record in the 400-meter run, placing 25th out of 50 runners, with Stephen Santiago just behind in 26th with a time of 54.19 seconds.

Maxwell Klimczak broke his own school record in the 3000-meter run and ran a personal best by 16 seconds, running a 9:43.20. Then he doubled back in the mile and ran strong race, just off his personal record.

Jerrel Graham set a new school record in the men's long jump with a jump of 5.49 meters.

On the women's side, Alice Wardy set a new school record in two events this weekend. In her 5th event of the day, she broke the school record in the 200-meter run, with a time of 27.36 seconds. Wardy also set a new school record in the triple jump, jumping 9.35 meters.

Morgan Holmes also had an impressive weekend, setting a school record in the 400-meter run, with a time of 1:06.79 seconds in her first attempt at that distance this season.

Sofie Haugsdahl threw 10.43 meters, placing 20th out of 43 throwers in the shot put, just off her own school record of 10.48 meters.

"This is our first competition in six weeks, after a long holiday break," said head coach, Heather Ely. "We had some highs and lows today, but overall we are really pleased with everyone's performance. They have been training hard, and it's very difficult to compete tired. As long as the athletes continue to buy in, be patient, and stay focused on the long view, we have some great things about to happen come April and May."

Next up for MBU Track and Field is the Finn Pincus Invitational, Hosted by Roanoke College on January the 25th.
