Staunton, Va - Mary Baldwin women's basketball took on the Monarchs of Methodist University in front of a full house Saturday afternoon at the PAC. While Methodist outscored the Fighting Squirrels in the second half, the visiting Monarchs were unable to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit while falling to the Fighting Squirrels, 69-56.
Mary Baldwin battled evenly with the Monarchs during the opening 10-minute quarter, exchanging the lead six times. A 13-4 run by Mary Baldwin to open the second quarter changed the tone of the game and as the teams headed into the locker rooms at halftime, the Fighting Squirrels had finished off a 22-6 period for a 44-24 lead over the Monarchs.
A big part of Mary Baldwin's game was the 3-point execution. The Fighting Squirrels hit 11 of their 26 attempts from long range, with Brooke Anders knocking down six of her nine attempts en route to her game-leading 22-point afternoon. MBU lived off an efficient first half, shooting 50 percent (16-32) from the floor and 50 percent (6-12) from 3-point land. Methodist wasn't far behind at 44 percent (11-25) but couldn't match the results from long range.
Mary Baldwin will host William Peace University on Saturday, February 2nd at 2PM.
