WBB Opens Season on the Road with Comeback Win

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The Mary Baldwin Women’s Basketball Team’s 2018-2019 season is underway with a win against St. Mary’s College of Maryland on the road, 81-70. The Fighting Squirrels successfully redeemed themselves in their season opener after a 78-56 deficit to St. Mary’s last season.

Junior guard Yaya Nedd and senior forward Nicole Blackburn combined for a total of 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 steals.

After the second half, MBU took control of the game, leading St. Mary’s by 7 points in the third quarter. The team used their momentum and spirit to maintain their lead until the final buzzer.

The leading scorers for St. Mary’s were sophomore Kyaira Priest with 22 points and senior Katie Robey with 13 points.

The Fighting Squirrels were able to take advantage of St. Mary’s 25 turnovers, translating them into 20 points for MBU.

On the team's first victory of the season, Head Coach Ross James gave his take, stating, “I am really proud of the team’s second half performance this evening. They fought back with team defense, strong rebounding and good ball movement on the offensive end. With that said, I believe this team is capable of playing at a much higher level.”

MBU continues on the road, competing this Sunday, Nov. 11 vs. Hollins University.
