STAUNTON, VA – The Mary Baldwin softball team split the games in a non-conference doubleheader against Bridgewater College, winning the first game 2-1 and dropping the second game 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Fighting Squirrels move to 6-24 overall, while the Eagles improve to 20-12 on the season.
In Game 1, Bridgewater scored its first and only run in the top of the third inning when Stephanie Carroll grounded out to score Avery Pinder.
Mary Baldwin answered in the bottom of the third inning when Claudia Dingman singled to score Kendall Field. Madison Cash singled in the bottom of the fifth to score Field to give MBU a 2-1 advantage, which it held for the remainder of the game.
Mary Baldwin was led by Cash who went 2-3 with one RBI and Field who went 1-1 with a pair of walks and scored both runs for the Fighting Squirrels. Courteney Back pitched a complete game going 7.0 innings only allowing five hits and one run, which was unearned.
In Game 2, Mary Baldwin started a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jordan Miller hit a three-run blast to left field, to help narrow the game to 6-3, but could not overcome the deficit.
The Eagled were led by Brooke Louden who went 1-1 with four RBI and one run scored and a walk, Sydney Layman and Katrina Martin each added a RBI.
Mary Baldwin will return to action Tuesday, April 9, when it travels to Greensboro for a conference doubleheader set to begin at 2 pm.
