STAUNTON, Va.—Behind two first half goals, the Mary Baldwin University men's soccer team garnered its first ever USA South win in a 2-0 victory against Berea at SMA Worth Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Fighting Squirrels move back to even on the season at 3-3 and 1-0 in conference play, while the Mountaineers fall to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league action.
MBU got on the board first after Carr Panetta netted his third goal of the season, which leads the team, after taking a ball from Brandon John in the 32nd minute. Nearly seven minutes later, Ousmane Dansoko headed a corner kick by Alejandro Aragon past the Berea goalkeeper to add an insurance tally, 2-0. The two goals held through the end of the first half.
Neither side was able to see the back on the net in the second period of play, while the Fighting Squirrels outshot the visitors 13-4 in the latter 45 minutes of the match.
In an aggressive match, a total of four cards were handed out, including a red card, and the teams combined for 30 fouls. MBU held a distinct advantage in shots at 27-8, while also tallying double-digit corner kick opportunities with 11 compared to just three for the visitors.
In goal, Obdulio Argueta recorded his first shutout of the season after knocking aside all three attempts that were on mark. Meanwhile, Luis Macias made eight saves in the loss.
The Fighting Squirrels are back on the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 18, for their third straight home match. MBU faces off with Southern Virginia with a scheduled first touch at 4 pm.
