ROME, Ga. – The USA South Athletic Conference announced the results of the 2019 "Pennies for a Purpose" initiative on Friday afternoon.
In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed, "Pennies for a Purpose", in 2008. This year's community service initiative, in its 12th year, began as the student-athletes returned from winter break. The schools had until April 18th to collect loose change which would later be donated to an organization of their choosing.
Over the 12-year history of the program, conference institutions have combined to raise over $100,000 for local organizations. This year, a total of $22,125.14 was collected in the community service program, which set a new yearly record.
Mary Baldwin collected $1,052.80 this year with all money raised being donated to Valley Mission, which is a homeless shelter located in Staunton.
Leading the way and winning the league competition this spring was Huntingdon College who raised $6,384.00, which broke the collection record. Rounding out the top three schools was Averett ($4,705.64) and William Peace ($2,035.00).
This is the second community service initiative that USA South SAAC runs. In addition, conference institutions take part in the "Cans Across the Conference" food drive, which takes place in the fall semester.
