New Market, VA—The Mary Baldwin Cross Country team competed in the JMU Invitational at New Market Battlefield Saturday afternoon. On a challenging 5.2k course, the Fighting Squirrels raced against DI and DIII programs, finishing 4th in the DIII division behind EMU, Shenandoah and Southern Virginia.

Leading the way once again for MBU was Colette Levens. She finished the race in 50th place overall in a time of 24:09.

The next four scorers were Stephanie Barbaro (59th), Elise Deng (61st), Jacquelin Rosas (63rd) and Josephina Reeder (65th).

Coach Ely felt the day went well. “Considering that the team is training through these early meets, I think they ran really well. Weather-wise, the conditions were perfect, but the runners are a little tired. We also sat out 2 runners due to injury, who were both in the top 3 for us last week, so once everyone is healthy and back in the mix, this team will only get stronger.”

The next competition for the Fighting Squirrels comes at the Hornet Harrier Invitational, hosted by Shenandoah University on September 23rd at Kernstown Battlefield.
