Winchester, VA—The Mary Baldwin cross country team competed at the Hornet Harrier Invitational, hosted by Shenandoah University. The field consisted of mostly DIII teams, but also included a number of JUCO and DII schools. MBU finished 14th overall in the 5k race.

The Fighting Squirrels were led by Stephanie Barbaro (24:46) who finished 66th in the field of 124 finishers. She also led MBU at the same race during the 2016 season.

Close behind were newcomers Josephina Reeder (25:17), Elise Deng (25:34) and Jacquelin Rosas (25:43).

The final scorer for MBU was senior Campbell Scollo, who finished the 5k course in 27:23, just off her time from last season. Rounding out the finishers for MBU were Nykia Free, Katelyn Pollock, and Sonje Green.

Coach Ely was encouraged by the Squirrels’ performance. “We had a number of runners sitting out today, so the team wasn’t at full strength. But today’s runners did a great job out there of executing the race plan I gave them. They worked well together on a tough course. We’ll have everyone back out racing next week, so I’ll be curious to see how they will step up and perform.”

MBU travels to Salisbury, Maryland next week to compete in the Don Cathcart Invitational. The women’s 6 kilometer race begins at 9:45 am.
