The Mary Baldwin volleyball team finished their season on the road this past weekend in North Carolina in a USA South quad match taking on William Peace and Greensboro. The Fighting Squirrels fell in straight sets in both matches. Makayla Scott and Michaela Beverly recorded 10 kills each for the weekend, while Brittany Sharon and Kelley Slack tallied 15 digs each.
First year head coach Ruth Thompson reflected on her first season with her young team. She said, “The Mary Baldwin volleyball team showed tremendous improvement during the 2017 season. As a team with only one senior, we were challenged with finding our team identity and creating a base for the volleyball program under new leadership.”
Freshman Michaela Beverly had a huge impact; she lead the team in kills with 84 while also tallying 11 aces and 143 digs this season. Sophomore Brenda Korlison and senior Makayla Scott added 69 and 49 kills respectively.
MBU’s only senior, Makayla Scott, lead the defense with 147 digs. Freshman Kelley Slack and sophomore Brittany Sharon also made an impact on defense contributing 135 and 131 digs respectively.
Brenda Korlison led the team with 16 blocks.
Coach Thompson added, “The senior leadership helped establish expectations at practice of dedication and hard work. This was evident in the resilience shown by the team after every competition. Coach Roberts and I began to establish a program with high expectations and expect athletes to perform in practice the way they plan to execute their offense and defense in competition. With the team so young, the entire program is looking forward to growing, recruiting, and becoming stronger in the 2018 season.”
