Basketball Prepares for Final Weekend

Following back to back contests against North Carolina Wesleyan, the Mary Baldwin basketball team (2-21, 0-12 USA South) is preparing to close out the regular season with two conference matchups.

This Saturday the Fighting Squirrels will travel to Averett University (15-8, 8-4 USA South) to finish their season series against the Cougars. Earlier in the season Averett defeated MBU in Staunton, so this game will be a great chance for redemption. The key to defeating Averett won’t be slowing down one player, but rather slowing down the team. In their last meeting, Averett had six players score nine or more points. Tip-off is at 2:00p.m. in the E. Stuart James Grant Center (Danville, VA).

Following Saturday’s game, MBU will travel further south on Sunday to close out the season against the Avenging Angels of Meredith College (3-19, 2-10 USA South). The Angels have struggled in USA South play this year, and the Fighting Squirrels see this game as a great opportunity to finish the season on the right note. The first time these two teams met, Amy Rhoney of Meredith led the game in both scoring and rebounding, and MBU will have to slow her down if they want to pull off the upset on MC’s senior day. Tip-off is at 2:00p.m. at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

As this season comes to a close, it is important to remember just how much potential this team has and how exciting these next few years in Staunton will be. The future is bright for these Fighting Squirrels.

Any Mary Baldwin alumni or fans in the area should try to make the trip to Danville or Raleigh to see one of the last two games of the season. Go MBU!
