Mary Baldwin softball second base standout Sam Bird earned a spot on the USA South All-Conference First Team for the 2017 season.
In order to be selected, Sam first was named First Team All-Conference for the East Division.
The junior transfer from Stuarts Draft, VA finished USA South Conference play with a conference batting average of .426 and a conference slugging percentage of .765.
The second baseman also finished with a conference fielding percentage of .987.
Sam shattered Mary Baldwin’s single season home run record tallying 9 home runs in 2017.
“We are extremely proud of Sam and what she has accomplished,” said Head Coach Christy Shelton. “Sam has worked hard on and off the field, especially transitioning to a different position, 2nd base. She has been a great defender, with good instincts and quick reactions. On top of that, Sam has been an aggressive hitter with lots of power. She attacks the ball and it shows in her statistics. Sam has definitely helped our program get better.”
The team finished the season with their best conference record since joining the USA South.
“The team has worked hard since the fall," Coach Shelton added. " Every player knows their role and it helped us in so many ways become better this year. They have great team chemistry and it shows in the way they play. We would not have won the games if everybody had not done their part or stepped up when they needed to. It is exciting to watch them battle in these games. They play for the love of the game and what else could we ask for.”
