As spring draws ever closer, the Mary Baldwin softball team is gearing up for a competitive season. The Squirrels compete in the East Division of the USA South Athletic Conference and will have a 38-game schedule.
One of MBU’s biggest goals this season will be to improve upon last year’s record. In 2016, the Squirrels went 8-28 against the teams that they are facing once again this season. Two new teams on the calendar for MBU are Wesleyan (GA) and Agnes Scott College.
Head Coach Christy Shelton is in her 13th season guiding MBU softball. When asked whether she thought the team record would improve this year said, “Oh, absolutely. We are mentally tougher than we have been in years past. I think we are going to be better defensively, we have some more speed, and we have some power hitters.” Coach Shelton praised this year's team. " I think everything is going as well as can be expected.”
The Fighting Squirrels will be looking for leadership on the field from nine returners. The team has also added five freshmen to the mix. The team captains, junior Chrissy Cromer and sophomore Alli Bascunan, have been leading the team on and off the field. “(The captains) have done a great job of keeping the team together and working with each other,” said Coach Shelton.
Mary Baldwin Softball hosts Guilford College in the first game of the season on February 26th. The contest starts at 1:00 p.m. Come out and support the Squirrels!
